Current Trends in Nursing II01:30

Current Trends in Nursing II

Trends in nursing are multifactorial and associated with changes in society, within the nursing profession, and in other professions. Notably, telehealth and remote nursing contribute to successful healthcare delivery for numerous patients and help reduce stress for nurses due to nursing shortages. Nurses can reach patients, monitor their conditions, and interact with them using computers, audio, visual accessories, and telephones—for example, remote patient monitoring systems. Likewise,...

Issues And Trends In Healthcare Delivery System

The issues and trends in healthcare delivery are constantly changing. The COVID-19 pandemic is one recent issue that wreaked havoc on healthcare systems, causing a shortage of healthcare workers, high demand for medicines and supplies, and increased medical expenditure due to a lack of insurance. Other issues include rising healthcare costs and care fragmentation.
Cost Containment
Payment for healthcare services has historically promoted adoption of costly and often unnecessary or inefficient...
Cancer Survival Analysis01:21

Cancer Survival Analysis

Cancer survival analysis focuses on quantifying and interpreting the time from a key starting point, such as diagnosis or the initiation of treatment, to a specific endpoint, such as remission or death. This analysis provides critical insights into treatment effectiveness and factors that influence patient outcomes, helping to shape clinical decisions and guide prognostic evaluations. A cornerstone of oncology research, survival analysis tackles the challenges of skewed, non-normally...
Combination Therapies and Personalized Medicine02:50

Combination Therapies and Personalized Medicine

Combining two or more treatment methods increases the life span of cancer patients while reducing damage to vital organs or tissue from the overuse of a single treatment. Combination therapy also targets different cancer-inducing pathways, thus reducing the chances of developing resistance to treatment.
The combination of the drug acetazolamide and sulforaphane is a good example of combination therapy to treat cancer. The cells in the interior of a large tumor often die due to the hypoxic and...
Cancer Therapies02:49

Cancer Therapies

Cancer therapies are various modes of treatment, such as surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy that are administered to cancer patients.
However, cancer treatments can pose several challenges, as therapies used to kill cancer cells are generally also toxic to normal cells. Moreover, cancer cells mutate rapidly and can develop resistance to chemical agents or radiation therapy. Besides, all types of cancer cells may not respond to the same therapy. Some cancer cells respond to one...

Summary

Telemedicine use in cancer care has stabilized into a hybrid model. While high in consultation-heavy services, its use is limited where physical exams are needed, informing future digital health strategies.

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Digital Health
  • Healthcare Management

Background:

  • The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated telemedicine adoption in comprehensive cancer centers.
  • Post-pandemic, the "steady-state" period reveals evolving telemedicine utilization patterns.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To analyze trends in telemedicine use across ambulatory visits at a cancer center from 2021 to 2024.
  • To identify variations in telemedicine adoption among different medical and surgical services.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of 3,761,467 ambulatory visits between 2021 and 2024.
  • Calculated the proportion of telemedicine visits overall and by clinical service.

Main Results:

  • Telemedicine constituted 29.4% of visits, declining from 33.1% in 2021 to 25.8% in 2024.
  • High adoption persisted in Clinical Genetics (96.1%), Hematology (89.3%), and Endocrinology (74.8%).
  • Low adoption was observed in Dermatology (4.9%) and Dental Surgery (0.1%), while Hepatopancreatobiliary Surgery increased to 41.6%.

Conclusions:

  • A durable hybrid care model is evident, with sustained telemedicine in consultation-focused services.
  • Limited telemedicine use in services requiring physical examinations or procedures suggests a need for tailored digital health strategies.
  • Findings can guide digital health strategy, resource allocation, and policy development as telehealth regulations evolve.
