Abstract:
The aim was to collect the evidence on pesticide contamination in infant formula. A systematic review was conducted according to PRISMA 2020 guidelines using PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science, without language restrictions (search updated to 7 August 2025). Studies reporting original analytical data on pesticide in infant formula were considered eligible. Methodological quality was assessed with the JBI checklist. Twenty-six studies published between 1975 and 2025 were included. Pesticides were detected in 22 studies, including organochlorines, organophosphates, pyrethroids, neonicotinoids, and herbicides. Studies reported concentrations generraly below legal thresholds, but the frequent detection of multi-class pesticide residues warrants caution. Only four studies estimated dietary intake, using non-standardized methodologies. All the studies showed a low or moderate risk of bias. An integrated approach combining robust analytical data, harmonized exposure models, and infant-specific toxicological endpoints within a coherent regulatory framework is essential to support evidence-based policies and ensure adequate protection of infants.
