Background:

Academic peer review is crucial for disseminating scientific knowledge.
Initiatives are exploring more open, efficient, and rewarding peer review methods.
A live community-based review was integrated into the editorial workflow of Current Research in Neurobiology (CRNEUR).

Purpose of the Study:

To explore the integration and impact of a live, community-based peer review process.
To assess the efficiency and participant reception of the Live Review approach.
To inform the development and scaling of open peer review models.

Main Methods:

Five preprints underwent Live Review, a 90-minute facilitated online discussion by PREreview.
Participants collaborated on a structured peer review document, with authors able to observe or respond.
Final reviews were published on PREreview's platform with a CC BY 4.0 license and DOI, informing CRNEUR's editorial decisions.

Main Results:

Live Review decision times (first and final) were comparable to CRNEUR's standard review process.
Community review: median 75 days to first decision (IQR: 41.3), 138 days to final decision (IQR: 22.5).
Standard review: median 92 days to first decision (IQR: 41.5), 211 days to final decision (IQR: 166.0).
Surveyed attendees (n=13) rated the review as respectful, time-efficient, and scientifically rigorous (median scores 5, 4, 4).

Conclusions:

The Live Review approach demonstrated comparable efficiency to standard peer review.
The method received positive feedback from participants regarding respectfulness, time efficiency, and rigor.
Further development is needed to scale and sustain live, community-based review models.
