Light-driven biohybrid systems for wastewater remediation: mechanisms, challenges, and prospects of waste
1School of the Environment and Safety Engineering, Key Laboratory of Zhenjiang, Jiangsu University, Zhenjiang 212013, China.
Abstract:
The convergence of interdisciplinary fields such as nanoscience and bioscience has given rise to novel strategies for wastewater remediation. As a result of this convergence, light-driven biohybrid systems, which integrate photocatalysis and biocatalysis, offer a promising route for wastewater treatment. In particular, the integration of nanomaterials engineering and genetic engineering has created new opportunities for the development of light-driven biohybrid systems. This review first examines the construction and advantages of biohybrid systems for the removal of wastewater pollutants. It then illustrates the mechanisms by which light-driven biohybrid systems facilitate pollutant remediation. Current challenges, prospects, and future research directions are discussed for both improving biohybrid system efficiency and advancing their application in real wastewater treatment. The potential of genetic engineering for system optimization and for valorizing wastewater into valuable chemicals is also highlighted. Overall, this review provides a comprehensive summary of current understanding of light-driven biohybrid systems for pollutant removal and outlines potential strategies for developing robust systems to address water contamination.
