Ischemic stroke is an acute cerebrovascular condition in which blood flow to a brain region is suddenly interrupted, leading to tissue infarction. Neurons depend on continuous oxygen and glucose supply, so even brief reductions in perfusion cause energy failure, ionic imbalance, and irreversible injury.   • The systemic immune-inflammation index (SII) reflects inflammatory status but its link to PSD is unclear.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between SII and the risk of developing PSD.
  • To clarify the role of SII as a potential biomarker for PSD.

  • A meta-analysis of observational studies was conducted.
  • Data from 7 studies including 2,780 adult stroke patients were pooled.
  • Random-effects models were used to calculate pooled odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs).

Main Results:

  • High SII at admission was significantly associated with an increased risk of PSD (OR = 2.14, 95% CI: 1.74-2.64).
  • Sensitivity analyses confirmed the robustness of the findings.
  • The association was consistent across various subgroups and study characteristics.

Conclusions:

  • Elevated SII may independently increase the risk of PSD by approximately twofold.
  • SII could serve as a practical inflammatory biomarker for early PSD risk identification in stroke patients.
