Nirmatrelvir-Ritonavir-Induced Pancreatitis: A Concern in the COVID Era

Abstract:
The World Health Organization reports that more than 500 drugs can cause drug-induced pancreatitis. Nirmatrelvir-ritonavir (Paxlovid; Pfizer, Mission, KS) has been approved to prevent hospitalization and mortality among patients with COVID-19. A 71-year-old man presented with epigastric abdominal pain and weight loss after recently completing a 5-day course of nirmatrelvir-ritonavir. He was found to have acute pancreatitis which resolved with symptomatic treatment. Nirmatrelvir-ritonavir is a commonly used medication for the treatment of COVID-19. Ritonavir has been identified as 1 potential drug, which can cause pancreatitis. Our case report raises the awareness of the rare complication of pancreatitis from nirmatrelvir-ritonavir.
