Conjunctival stromal tumor in an 18-month-old girl: A case report

Purpose:
To report an unusual case of conjunctival stromal tumor (COST) located in the punctum of the eyelid in an 18-month-girl.
Observation:
The patient is an 18-month female, with no significant medical history or ocular trauma, who presented with a slowly growing mass on the punctum of her right-upper eyelid. Ophthalmic exam showed that the lesion was not attached to the globe of the eye. The lesion was completely surgically excised. Histopathological analysis showed a well-circumscribed polypoid nodule comprised of bland spindled cells with pseudonuclear inclusions and giant cells with floret-like nuclear configurations. The immunohistochemical staining pattern was consistent with COST.
Conclusion:
COST is an emerging entity first described in 2012 and rarely reported in children. Herein, we report the third diagnosis of COST in a child, the youngest age reported to date. As such, it should be considered in the differential diagnosis of a conjunctival lesion regardless of age. In the differential diagnosis, it is important to distinguish COST from conjunctival myxoma given the syndromic associations of the latter.
