Ovarian Cycle01:27

Ovarian Cycle

The menstrual cycle includes a critical component known as the ovarian cycle, which undergoes two main phases each month—the follicular phase and the luteal phase. The follicular phase is variable and averaging around 14 days. Ovulation, triggered by a surge in luteinizing hormone (LH), marks the transition between the two phases. The second phase, the luteal phase, is relatively consistent, lasting approximately 14 days, and is marked by the activity of the corpus luteum. While a cycle length...

Summary

Corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) is expressed in the mouse uterus during early pregnancy and plays a role in decidualization. This finding helps clarify mechanisms of embryo implantation and pregnancy maintenance.

Area of Science:

  • Reproductive Biology
  • Endocrinology
  • Developmental Biology

Background:

  • Embryo implantation and decidualization are critical for successful pregnancy.
  • The precise mechanisms governing these processes, particularly the role of uterine corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH), remain incompletely understood.
  • While hypothalamic CRH is well-studied in early pregnancy, its uterine function is less defined.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the expression pattern of CRH in the mouse uterus during early pregnancy.
  • To elucidate the regulatory mechanisms and functional significance of CRH in embryo implantation and decidualization.

Main Methods:

  • Immunofluorescence was employed to detect CRH protein levels in the mouse uterus.
  • In vitro decidualization assays were performed using a CRH receptor 1 (CRHR1) inhibitor and recombinant CRH protein.

Main Results:

  • CRH protein was detected in the uterine luminal epithelium from days 1-4 of pregnancy.
  • Strong CRH localization was observed in the primary decidua at the implantation site on day 5.
  • Inhibition of CRHR1 significantly impaired in vitro decidualization in mice.

Conclusions:

  • CRH is significantly expressed in the primary decidua and is implicated in mouse decidualization.
  • These findings contribute to a better understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying embryo implantation and decidualization.
