Abstract:
The resurgence of pertussis has become a global public health challenge. Consequently, pertussis prevention and control face new challenges. Despite high vaccination coverage with pertussis-containing vaccines, the incidence rate of pertussis has increased significantly in recent years. This article reviews the research and development (R&D) progress of whole-cell pertussis vaccines, acellular pertussis vaccines (including co-purified and component-purified pertussis vaccines), and novel pertussis-containing vaccines. It also reviews the evolution and research progress of immunization strategies across different populations, including children, adolescents, adults, and pregnant women, both globally and in China. Taking into account the dynamic epidemiological characteristics of China, dual-track recommendations for precisely optimizing pertussis-containing immunization strategies and accelerating novel vaccine R&D are proposed so as to control the current resurgence of pertussis and ultimately achieve lifelong prevention and control of pertussis.
