Background:

Intimate partner violence (IPV) encompasses a range of abusive behaviors.
Coercive controlling behavior (CCB) is a pattern of control within IPV, often escalating to lethal outcomes.
Predicting CCB and lethality in IPV is crucial for victim safety and intervention.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate risk factors and victim fear as predictors of charges indicating coercive controlling behavior in intimate partner violence.
To determine the relationship between women's fear, specific risk factors, and the likelihood of coercive control and lethality-type charges.

Main Methods:

Analysis of 700 supplementary police reports from intimate partner violence calls.
Utilized multiple regression analyses to identify significant predictors.
Examined police-assessed fear and 20 identified risk factors.

Main Results:

Women's fear was a significant indicator of coercive control risk factors.
Fear, threats to harm/kill, escalating assaults/threats, and firearm threats/use predicted coercive control and lethality charges.
Multiple risk factors were associated with coercive control-type and lethality-type charges.

Victim's fear is a key indicator in assessing coercive control and potential lethality in intimate partner violence.
