This study developed a toolkit of 17 evidence-based non-pharmacological pain management interventions for nursing home residents. The toolkit aids staff in selecting and implementing effective strategies to improve pain care.
Area of Science:
- Gerontology
- Pain Management
- Nursing Home Care
Background:
- Pain is common in nursing home residents, yet non-pharmacological interventions are underused.
- Evidence-based guidelines for pain management are not consistently implemented in daily practice.
- A need exists for practical tools to support non-pharmacological pain management in this population.
Purpose of the Study:
- To collaboratively develop a user-friendly toolkit of evidence-based non-pharmacological pain management interventions.
- To improve the care of nursing home residents experiencing pain.
- To bridge the gap between evidence-based guidelines and clinical practice.
Main Methods:
- A systematic approach was used, involving nursing staff from the project's inception.
- Relevant non-pharmacological interventions were identified.
- Current evidence was synthesized using evidence summaries and rapid reviews.
Main Results:
- A toolkit was created featuring 17 highly-rated non-pharmacological interventions selected by nursing staff.
- Evidence summaries were available for 14 interventions; rapid reviews were conducted for five.
- Interventions included empathetic support and specific pillow positioning for neck and back pain.
Conclusions:
- The developed toolkit provides practical, evidence-based non-pharmacological pain management options for nursing homes.
- It supports individualized, patient-centered care and a holistic approach to pain management.
- The toolkit assists nursing staff in selecting and implementing interventions tailored to resident needs and preferences.
