Abstract:
γ-Butyrolactone (GBL) is an important structural motif commonly found in a wide range of natural products, bioactive molecules, agrochemicals, and fragrance compounds. In this study, a Lewis acid-assisted approach was developed to prepare β-arylthio-γ-butyrolactone skeletons using benzenesulfonyl chloride as a sulfur source. This approach requires no transition metal catalysts and provides several advantages, including mild reaction conditions, broad substrate scope, and good functional group compatibility.

One of the convenient methods for the preparation of aldehydes and ketones is via hydration of alkynes. Hydroboration-oxidation of alkynes is an indirect hydration reaction in which an alkyne is treated with borane followed by oxidation with alkaline peroxide to form an enol that rapidly converts into an aldehyde or a ketone. Terminal alkynes form aldehydes, whereas internal alkynes give ketones as the final product.
