Background:

Food insecurity (FI) and housing instability (HI) present significant challenges for college students.
These issues can impede students' ability to balance academic responsibilities with personal needs.
Understanding the prevalence and impact of FI and HI is crucial for supporting student success.

Purpose of the Study:

To determine the prevalence of food insecurity and housing instability among dental hygiene students.
To examine the relationship between FI, HI, and students' perceptions of academic performance and preparedness.
To investigate the association between FI, HI, and psychological well-being (PWB).

Main Methods:

A cross-sectional survey was administered to 287 dental hygiene students.
Validated instruments included the USDA 6-item Food Security Module, Housing Instability Scale, and Ryff's Psychological Well-Being Scale.
Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, correlation, and regression analyses.

Main Results:

A total of 178 students completed the survey (62.2% completion rate).
Moderate levels of FI (M=2.34) and PWB (M=2.66) were observed, alongside high HI (M=3.26).
FI negatively predicted GPA (β=-0.26), while HI positively predicted perceived academic preparedness (β=0.18). PWB positively correlated with perceived academic preparedness (β=0.41).

Conclusions:

FI and HI are significant factors impacting academic outcomes in dental hygiene students.
These insecurities may hinder academic success and exam readiness.
Institutional support addressing food and housing security can enhance student success in dental hygiene programs.
