Area of Science:

  • Orthopedics
  • Pain Management
  • Geriatric Medicine

Background:

  • Osteoarthritis incidence is increasing in the Netherlands, driven by an aging population.
  • This leads to significant disease burden, including healthcare costs, reduced work participation, and impaired independent living.
  • Current osteoarthritis treatment algorithms begin with conservative measures like analgesics, followed by joint replacement surgery if needed.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To address the unmet needs in osteoarthritis pain management for patients unresponsive to or ineligible for traditional treatments.
  • To explore the potential of peri-articular denervation as an alternative pain relief strategy.
  • To highlight the need for evolving osteoarthritis pain treatment algorithms.

Fu's Subcutaneous Needling for Knee Osteoarthritis Pain

Published on: March 24, 2023

  • Review of current osteoarthritis treatment pathways.
  • Identification of patient subgroups with limited treatment options.
  • Introduction of peri-articular denervation as a therapeutic consideration.
  • Main Results:

    • Some osteoarthritis patients do not benefit from or cannot undergo joint replacement surgery.
    • Analgesics may be ineffective, risky, or cause side effects in certain patient groups.
    • Peri-articular denervation presents a viable option to alleviate pain and improve function.

    Conclusions:

    • Peri-articular denervation can effectively reduce pain in osteoarthritis patients.
    • This treatment can help patients regain mobility and improve their quality of life.
    • Further development of the osteoarthritis pain treatment algorithm is necessary to incorporate such innovative approaches.
