Summary

This study shows that a digital cognitive training program with social interaction and an AI agent improved cognitive function and social support in older adults. Engagement through social features was key to these positive outcomes.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the 12-week digital cognitive training program's impact on older adults' cognitive function.
  • To assess if a group chat service enhances engagement and social support through participant and AI interaction.
  • To investigate the role of social interaction and AI in sustained digital health intervention use.

Main Methods:

  • 133 older adults (mean age 64.75) without dementia diagnosis participated for 12 weeks.
  • The Care & Cure program included an AI chatbot (Sammy Talk) and group chat (Our Town).
  • Cognitive function (K-MMSE-2), social support, depression, and engagement were measured; usage logs were analyzed.

Main Results:

  • Cognitive function improved post-intervention (Hedges g=0.350, P<.001).
  • Active users showed greater cognitive gains, particularly those with lower baseline scores (Hedges g=0.523, P<.001).
  • Social support increased, engagement rose (t132=2.008, P<.05), and depression scores decreased (t132=3.093, P<.01). Group chat participation significantly boosted engagement (t131=12.395, P<.001), which correlated with higher social support and improved cognition.

Conclusions:

  • The Care & Cure program effectively enhanced cognitive function and social support in older adults.
  • Social interaction, facilitated by group chat and AI, was crucial for increasing engagement and achieving cognitive benefits.
  • Future digital cognitive interventions should integrate social mechanisms to ensure meaningful and sustained effects.
