Regulation of beneficial intracellular symbionts in insects

Abstract:
Intracellular bacterial symbionts play an important role in the supplementation of limiting essential nutrients in many insects and have been the driving force behind the diversification of certain lineages. Although hosts are generally assumed to regulate the activity of beneficial intracellular symbionts, the mechanisms underlying this control remain incompletely understood. Here, we review current insights into how intracellular mutualisms are regulated across multiple biological levels, including symbiont population size, spatial organization, morphology, metabolic integration, and gene expression. We highlight how host developmental programs, immune pathways, and metabolic networks shape these interactions, while symbionts may retain limited autonomous regulatory responses. Understanding how these regulatory layers interact remains an important challenge for explaining the stability and evolution of host-symbiont partnerships.
