Summary

Canine hearing protection devices (CHPDs) were tested to see if they could prevent noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) in dogs. Results show CHPDs effectively increase hearing thresholds, protecting canine hearing from loud noises.

  • Sound levels were gradually decreased from 70 dB nHL until wave V became inapparent.
  • Main Results:

    • Median hearing thresholds without CHPD were 40 dB (left ear) and 50 dB (right ear).
    • With CHPDs, median hearing thresholds increased to over 70 dB in both ears (AU) for 20 out of 21 canines.
    • The CHPD effectively blocked sounds of 70 dB nHL or less, significantly increasing hearing thresholds.

    Conclusions:

    • The tested CHPD objectively increases canine hearing thresholds.
    • This canine hearing protection device demonstrates potential in mitigating noise-induced hearing loss in dogs.
    • Further application of validated CHPDs could reduce the incidence of NIHL in canine populations.
