Purpose:
This study was conducted as a randomized controlled study to examine the effects of picture template coloring activity on children's anxiety and fear before circumcision.
Design:
This study was designed as a randomized controlled trial.
Methods:
This study was conducted with children aged 5-10 who were scheduled to undergo circumcision at a hospital in the Southeastern Anatolia Region of Turkey. The study was completed with 50 children included in the picture template coloring (25) and control (25) groups. Children in the picture template coloring group were given a ready-made picture template and coloring pencils and were asked to color the pictures in the colors they wanted. The anxiety of the children in the picture template coloring and control groups was assessed using the "Children's Anxiety Scale-State (CAS-D)" and their fears were assessed using the "Children's Fear Scale (CFS)".
Findings:
Based on the children's self-reports, it was determined that there was a significant decrease in the post-test fear and anxiety scores of the children in the picture template coloring group. In the comparison between the groups based on mothers' reports, it was determined that the post-test fear and anxiety scores of the children in both groups decreased significantly. However, it was determined that the mean fear and anxiety scores of the children in the picture template coloring group were lower than the control group.
Conclusion:
In our study, it was determined that the pre-circumcision picture template coloring activity was effective in reducing children's fears and anxiety. In order to reduce the fears and anxiety of children before the circumcision, it is recommended to have a low-cost picture template coloring done.
