Background:

  • Persistent sleep disturbances in euthymic bipolar disorder (BD) may contribute to cognitive deficits.
  • While subjective sleep issues are linked to cognition, objective sleep-cognition associations in BD are under-explored.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the associations between objective sleep parameters and cognitive performance in euthymic individuals with BD.

Main Methods:

  • 40 euthymic BD patients underwent 21-day actigraphy for objective sleep assessment.
  • Cognitive performance was measured using the Screen for Cognitive Impairment in Psychiatry (SCIP).
  • Spearman correlations and multivariable linear regression models were used to analyze associations, with false discovery rate correction.

Main Results:

  • Assumed sleep duration negatively correlated with overall cognitive scores (SCIP total score).
  • Total sleep time was associated with delayed verbal learning.
  • Sleep onset latency showed negative associations with working memory and processing speed.
  • Wake time after sleep onset (WASO) was negatively associated with verbal fluency.

Conclusions:

  • Objective sleep duration, initiation, and continuity are associated with distinct cognitive domains in euthymic BD.
  • Sleep continuity and initiation are important correlates of cognitive functioning in BD, beyond sleep duration alone.
  • Findings are hypothesis-generating and require replication in larger, longitudinal studies.
