Community Based Intervention01:30

Community Based Intervention

Community-based interventions in mental health represent a paradigm shift from institution-centered care to treatments embedded within the fabric of local communities. By prioritizing inclusion and leveraging existing societal structures, this approach fosters a supportive environment conducive to addressing mental health challenges while promoting individual dignity and agency.

Longitudinal Research02:20

Longitudinal Research

Sometimes we want to see how people change over time, as in studies of human development and lifespan. When we test the same group of individuals repeatedly over an extended period of time, we are conducting longitudinal research. Longitudinal research is a research design in which data-gathering is administered repeatedly over an extended period of time. For example, we may survey a group of individuals about their dietary habits at age 20, retest them a decade later at age 30, and then again...
Longitudinal Studies01:26

Longitudinal Studies

Longitudinal studies are also widely used in other medical and social science fields. For instance, in cardiovascular research, they can monitor patients' health over decades to identify risk factors for heart disease, such as high cholesterol or smoking, and evaluate the long-term effectiveness of preventive measures. Similarly, in mental health studies, researchers might follow individuals from adolescence into adulthood to understand the development and progression of conditions like...
Behavioral Genetics and Its Designs01:23

Behavioral Genetics and Its Designs

Behavior genetics explores how genetic inheritance influences human behavior. It focuses on how genes, passed from parents to offspring, contribute to the development of behavioral traits and tendencies. This branch of genetics seeks to understand the complex interplay between inherited genetic factors and environmental influences in shaping our behaviors.
The primary methodologies used in behavior genetics include family studies, twin studies, and adoption studies, each providing unique...
Socioemotional Experience and Gender Development01:30

Socioemotional Experience and Gender Development

Social-emotional experiences and cultural influences play significant roles in shaping gender development. During middle childhood, from ages 6 to 11, peer groups become dominant in reinforcing gender norms. Children in this age group often align with same-gender peer groups, which actively encourage behaviors that conform to traditional gender roles. For instance, boys may be discouraged from engaging in activities perceived as feminine, reinforcing culturally dictated norms about masculinity...
Parental Care00:55

Parental Care

Many animals exhibit parental care behavior, including feeding, grooming, and protecting young offspring. Parental care is universal in mammals and birds, which often have young that are born relatively helpless. Several species of insects and fish, as well as some amphibians, also care for their young.

Summary

The Fathers Empowered to Learn, Lead, and Achieve Success (FELLAS®) program significantly improved fathers' life skills, parenting, and economic stability. These positive changes were sustained six months post-intervention, indicating long-term benefits for family health.

Area of Science:

  • Public Health
  • Family Studies
  • Social Work

Background:

  • Fatherhood programs are increasingly recognized for their potential to impact social determinants of health (SDOH).
  • The Fathers Empowered to Learn, Lead, and Achieve Success (FELLAS®) program aims to enhance fathers' life skills, parenting, and economic stability.
  • Evaluating FELLAS® offers insights into how such programs influence upstream health determinants.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the effectiveness of the FELLAS® fatherhood program.
  • To assess program outcomes related to SDOH, including economic stability, family functioning, and social relationships.
  • To explore participant experiences and perceived skill development through qualitative methods.

Main Methods:

  • A 35-hour multi-component intervention targeting life skills, parenting, relationships, and economic stability.
  • 216 fathers completed self-report questionnaires at pretest, posttest, and six-month follow-up.
  • Outcomes included financial attitudes, parenting skills, father involvement, conflict resolution, communication, unemployment, and full-time employment, supplemented by qualitative focus groups.

Main Results:

  • Statistically significant improvements were observed across all seven outcome measures from pretest to posttest.
  • Improvements were sustained at six-month follow-up for six outcomes, with notable reductions in unemployment and increases in full-time employment.
  • Qualitative data corroborated quantitative findings, with participants reporting enhanced parenting, relationships, communication, and employment behaviors.

Conclusions:

  • The FELLAS® program demonstrated significant improvements in outcomes aligned with key social determinants of health.
  • Findings suggest fatherhood programs can positively influence family and population health via upstream pathways.
  • This descriptive evaluation provides a basis for future research on causal effects and mechanisms of change in fatherhood interventions.
