Outcome of Conservative Management of Pancreatic Pseudocyst

Pancreatic pseudocyst is a late complication following an attack of pancreatitis for both acute and chronic. Alcoholic and gallstone pancreatitis are common causes of the situation all over the world. The purpose of this study was to establish a general guideline or a protocol for the effective management of patients with pseudocysts. All patients having acute pancreatitis were included in the study. This observational study was conducted in four different tertiary hospitals from January 2014 to December 2014 in Dhaka city. The diagnosis was made on both the clinical picture and the relevant investigation findings. The follow-up period was closely monitored; all complications were noted. A total of 50 patients were included in the study. All patients got conservative therapy, 15 patients developed resolution and 35 did not. The main cause was found gallstone. The most commonly affected site was the pancreatic head. The result of conservative management was found to be better in those cases where cysts were found in the head of the pancreas. A significant number of patients (30.0%) (p=0.0046) resolve spontaneously without any recurrence. It may be a choice for those cases where presenting complaints could be controlled and no further complications arise.
