Introduction:
Proteus syndrome is caused by AKT1 gene mutations. It manifests during childhood and results in asymmetric overgrowth of skin, bone, central nervous system, and adipose tissues and has a poor survival rate. Currently, there are no targeted drug treatments for this condition. Due to its rarity, the nonspecific symptoms and complications of Proteus syndrome often go unrecognized and, thus, untreated by clinicians.
Case Description:
This case report documents the diagnosis and treatment of a 14-year-old patient with Proteus syndrome who developed severe soft tissue infection secondary to lower limb deformity. A clinical pharmacist implemented individualized anti-infective interventions based on etiology, liver function, and body weight, significantly optimizing the treatment course and promoting wound healing.
Discussion:
Through this report, we aim to enhance awareness of the diverse clinical presentations of Proteus syndrome and emphasize the need for a coordinated healthcare approach to effectively manage its associated complications.
