Impact of Pre-Test Sleep Duration on Audiometric Testing Outcomes

Background:
Sleep deprivation affects vigilant attention and may influence audiological test performance. This study aims to evaluate the effects of pre-test sleep duration on audiological findings.
Methods:
This prospective study was conducted at the University of Health Sciences Hamidiye Sisli Etfal Education and Research Hospital's Ear, Nose, Throat, and Audiology Department from August 2024 to November 2024, involving 35 participants. Hearing thresholds, test durations, and psychomotor vigilance attention were measured and compared under 2 conditions: after night shifts (less than 6 hours of sleep) and after normal sleep (more than 6 hours). Vigilance attention was assessed using the psychomotor vigilance test (PVT). Sleep duration, PVT results, and audiological findings were analyzed.
Results:
After night shifts, air conduction levels were significantly higher compared to measurements after normal sleep at 500 Hz (8.10 ± 4.43 vs. 5.19 ± 3.96 dB), 1000 Hz (8.16 ± 4.01 vs. 5.07 ± 3.6 dB), and 2000 Hz (8.16 ± 4.43 vs. 5.04 ± 3.38 dB) (P=.007, P= .021, P=.018 respectively). The PVT prolongation duration was significantly greater in participants showing ≥5 dB shifts in air conduction hearing thresholds after sleep deprivation compared to those with <5 dB shifts (405.93 ± 476.51 ms vs. 360.9 ± 910.95 ms, P=.05).
Conclusion:
Sleep deprivation affects vigilance, attention, and consequently impacts audiological test performance. Adequate sleep duration should be recommended prior to audiological testing to ensure more accurate results.
