We developed a tactile neuromorphic ion-gated vertical transistor display (TN-VTD) that integrates sensing, processing, and visual output. This device achieves high accuracy in spoken-digit classification by combining electrical and optical signals.
Area of Science:
- Materials Science
- Neurotechnology
- Optoelectronics
Background:
- Next-generation intelligent interfaces require integrated tactile sensing, neuromorphic processing, and visual emission.
- Existing tactile neuromorphic displays need improvements in brightness, emission stability, and optical modulation.
Purpose of the Study:
- To present a novel tactile neuromorphic ion-gated vertical transistor display (TN-VTD).
- To demonstrate the device's capability for simultaneous pressure sensing, synaptic plasticity, and electroluminescence.
Main Methods:
- Fabricated a TN-VTD with a hemispherical elastomeric gate and nanoporous Al electrode.
- Utilized ion penetration to modulate doping and band bending in an emissive layer upon mechanical deformation.
- Investigated ion-coupled design for pressure-dependent electrical and optical responses.
Main Results:
- Achieved continuous, stable DC emission (>24 h) and gate-enhanced brightness.
- Demonstrated pressure-dependent expansion of the emissive area.
- Showcased nonlinear fading-memory responses with distinct temporal dynamics.
- Attained 93.5% spoken-digit classification accuracy, outperforming conductance-only operation.
Conclusions:
- The TN-VTD serves as a unified platform for sensing, neuromorphic processing, and visual output.
- Multidimensional state encoding via concurrent electrical and optical outputs enhances performance.
- This technology advances the development of intelligent interfaces.
