Abstract:
The characteristic intricate 3- dimensional shaped thin cartilage, covered by thin skin, make the external ear prone to cartilage exposure and significant deformation after injury. Auricular reconstruction after such injuries often involves the use of local flaps with or without cartilage grafts. However, this is challenging when surrounding skin scarring limits the use of local flaps. We report a case of auricular reconstruction using a contralateral free anterior auricular flap with vascularized helical cartilage for reconstruction of a post-burn defect of the ear helix. Post operative outcomes were favorable, with no complications and successful flap survival. The patient was able to wear glasses, and sensory recovery was achieved with a Semmes Weinstein monofilament value of 2.44 with 2 years follow up. This method provides both aesthetic and functional reconstruction, offering a valuable option for cases when scarring limits other reconstructive methods.
