Assistive device prescriptions in multiple sclerosis: a cross-sectional study of disability distribution

Purpose:
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a progressive neurological disease often leading to functional decline. This study aimed to assess disability distribution-based on assistive aid needs-for MS patients within the Local Health Authority (ASP) of a metropolitan urban area of Italy over six months.
Materials And Methods:
A cross-sectional analysis was conducted on 600 prescriptions for 133 MS patients between January and July 2025. Data were stratified by demographics, healthcare district, device type and prescribing physicians. Chi-squared tests assessed statistical associations (p < 0.05).
Results:
Mobility aids, especially wheelchairs and attachments accounted for 48%. Orthopaedic footwear and orthoses were also prevalent (39.7%), confirming mobility as the primary need. Age was significantly associated with device type (χ2 = 1744, p < 0.0001), indicating greater care need in older patients. Physical medicine and rehabilitation specialists issued 63.2% of prescriptions, followed by neurologists (18.2%). Territorial variability in device types and prescribing specialties (p < 0.0001) reflected local clinical practice and the patients' clinical status at the time of prescription.
Conclusions:
Prescribing patterns in MS care reflect age-related disability, territorial organisation, and specialist roles. Findings support the need for tailored resource planning and standardised, multidisciplinary pathways to ensure equitable access and efficient resource allocation.
