Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate whether the association between SES and stroke outcomes differs by sex.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective cohort study using the National Inpatient Sample (2016-2021).
  • Analysis of patients with acute ischemic stroke, intracerebral hemorrhage, and subarachnoid hemorrhage.
  • Primary exposure: ZIP code income quartile. Statistical analysis: Multivariable logistic regression with sex-stratified models due to observed interactions.

Main Results:

  • Over 2.8 million acute ischemic stroke, 406,550 intracerebral hemorrhage, and 134,510 subarachnoid hemorrhage admissions were analyzed.
  • In males, lower income quartile was linked to increased inpatient mortality across all stroke types (e.g., OR 1.11 for ischemic stroke).
  • In females, no significant association was found between income quartile and inpatient mortality for any stroke subtype.
