Sexual Identity Development and Sexual Debut in Black Women-Loving Women

None:
Few studies examine Black women-loving women's (Black WLW) sexual identity development and same-gender sexual debut. Using semi-structured interviewing and open-ended surveys, this qualitative analysis examines how Black WLW interpret experiences that contributed to their sexual identity development, including childhood attractions, same-gender sexual encounters, and later-life relational experiences. Depending on whether these early sexual encounters were desired or undesired, these experiences continue to shape affirming or ambivalent feelings regarding the acceptance of sexual identity in adulthood. These novel findings are important since they reveal how Black WLW conceptualize their sexual identities through how they have negotiated their childhood same-gender sexual encounters.
