Purpose of the Study:

  • To systematically evaluate the efficacy of various oral nutritional supplements in preventing preeclampsia.
  • To compare the effectiveness of different supplements against placebo and each other.

Main Methods:

  • Conducted a network meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.
  • Searched major databases (PubMed, Cochrane Library, Embase, Web of Science) for relevant studies.
  • Included 22 studies with a total of 36,104 participants.

Main Results:

  • L-arginine combined with vitamins B, C, and E (L-arginine-VB-VC-VE), linoleic-acid-calcium, and vitamin D significantly reduced preeclampsia risk compared to placebo.
  • Calcium also showed a preventive effect, though less pronounced than the other three.
  • L-arginine-VB-VC-VE, linoleic-acid-calcium, and vitamin D were superior to calcium and showed no significant differences among themselves.
  • None of the evaluated supplements effectively prevented gestational hypertension.

Conclusions:

  • Oral calcium, L-arginine-VB-VC-VE, linoleic-acid-calcium, and vitamin D are potentially effective strategies for preeclampsia prevention.
  • Further research may clarify the optimal supplement and dosage for preeclampsia prevention.
