Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the impact of switching from gas to electric stoves on asthma control.
  • To assess changes in asthma-related emergency visits, missed school/work days, and indoor NO2 levels.

Main Methods:

  • 85 individuals with poorly controlled asthma (Asthma Control Questionnaire [ACQ] score > 1.5) had their gas stoves replaced with electric stoves.
  • Asthma control (ACQ score), emergency room visits, hospitalizations, missed work/school days, and indoor NO2 levels were measured before and after the stove change.

Main Results:

  • The average ACQ score improved significantly from 2.6 to 1.5 after switching to electric stoves.
  • Emergency room visits or hospitalizations for asthma decreased from 11.8% to 3.5%.
  • Indoor NO2 levels dropped substantially from 21.0 to 6.3 ppb.

  • Replacing gas stoves with electric stoves improved asthma control and reduced indoor NO2 levels.
