Ostomy Care01:24

Ostomy Care

Introduction
An ostomy is a surgical procedure that creates an artificial opening from the intestines to the outside of the body, allowing for the rerouting of effluent. This opening is known as a stoma. A stoma usually protrudes above the skin surface, appearing pink or red, moist, and round, and it lacks nerve sensations.
There are different types of ostomies, including colostomies, ileostomies, and urostomies:

Inflammatory Bowel Disease V: Surgical Management

Surgical interventions for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), which includes ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease, are essential in managing symptoms and addressing complications. The selection of surgical procedures is contingent upon the specific conditions and complications that stem from these illnesses.
Here are some common surgical interventions for IBD:

Assessment of the Gastrointestinal System II: Health Perception Pattern

Assessing the gastrointestinal (GI) system is a complex process that begins with collecting subjective data. This data, collected through patient interviews, provides crucial insights into the patient's health history, perception patterns, and lifestyle habits, all contributing significantly to GI health.
Health Perception Patterns
Health perception patterns offer valuable insights into a patient's lifestyle habits and how they may impact their GI health. These patterns include:

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Psychology
  • Rehabilitation

Background:

  • Ostomy surgery is common in cancer treatment, significantly affecting patients' body image and psychosocial health.
  • Existing research primarily focuses on colorectal cancer, neglecting a comprehensive view of body image across diverse ostomy populations.
  • This review synthesizes current knowledge on body image in cancer survivors with ostomies.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To systematically review and synthesize quantitative research on body image in cancer survivors with ostomies.
  • To identify the impact of ostomy presence and type on body image.
  • To explore the relationship between body image and psychosocial outcomes in this population.

Main Methods:

  • Systematic review adhering to PRISMA guidelines.
  • Searched four major databases (PsycINFO, MEDLINE, CINAHL, Web of Science).
  • Included 10 quantitative studies with 1454 participants, using validated body image measures and separable ostomy data.

Main Results:

  • Ostomy presence consistently correlates with poorer body image compared to non-stoma groups.
  • Permanent stomas show the greatest body image disturbance; temporary stoma reversal improves it.
  • Body image is linked to quality of life, anxiety, depression, self-efficacy, and social support, often mediating psychological well-being.

Conclusions:

  • Body image distress is a significant, under-recognized issue for cancer survivors with ostomies.
  • There's a need for clearer definitions, standardized ostomy-sensitive measures, and longitudinal research across cancer types.
  • Implementing refined measurements, routine assessments, and psychosocial interventions can enhance body image and outcomes.
