Abstract:
In the parallel paper (Sochaczewska et al., 2026; this issue), we have shown that in advanced dermapterans (the Eudermaptera), all lysosome-like bodies/organelles present in the oocyte and associated nurse cell are transferred to the posterior extremity of the oocyte, where they aggregate, forming a distinct compartment, termed the posterior pole lysosomal compartment. Here we report the results of histological, histochemical and ultrastructural analyses of developing ovarian follicles in two species, Gonolabina spectabilis and Euborellia annulipes, representing basally branching dermapteran families (Pygidicranidae and Anisolabididae, respectively). We show that in these species, the lysosome-like bodies only initially gather in the central/posterior ooplasm, but as oogenesis progresses, they disperse among newly formed reserve materials. These findings indicate that the posterior pole lysosomal compartment is characteristic of the Eudermaptera only, and that the mechanisms implicated in its formation evolved within this lineage.
