This study shows non-telescopic Rush rods effectively correct severe bone deformities in children with osteogenesis imperfecta, restoring ambulation. This offers a viable alternative when telescopic rods are unavailable.
Area of Science:
- Orthopedics
- Genetics
- Pediatric Surgery
Background:
- Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) causes brittle bones due to type I collagen defects, leading to long-bone deformities.
- Deformities result from fragility, fractures, and muscle forces, necessitating surgical correction for function.
- Telescopic intramedullary rods are standard but costly and may be unavailable.
