Objective:
This study investigates the factors influencing poor communication function outcomes in children with cerebral palsy.
Methods:
This retrospective study included children with CP treated at the Department of Neurosurgery, Second Affiliated Hospital of Xinjiang Medical University, between January 2017 and December 2022. Communication function was assessed using the Communication Function Classification System (CFCS), with CFCS levels I-III defined as good communication function and levels IV-V as poor communication function. Demographic, perinatal, maternal, feeding-related, and family-history variables were extracted from clinical records. Univariate analysis and multivariable logistic regression were performed to identify factors associated with poor communication outcomes.
Results:
A total of 402 children with CP were included in the analysis. Poor communication function was observed in 156 children. In the multivariable logistic regression analysis, younger age, low birth weight, maternal smoking during pregnancy, non-breastfeeding, and a positive family history were independently associated with poor communication outcomes.
Conclusion:
In conclusion, younger age, low birth weight, maternal smoking during pregnancy, non-breastfeeding, and a positive family history were independently associated with poor communication outcomes in children with CP.
