Long-term Peritoneal Dialysis after Successful Exteriorization of a Secondary Embedded Catheter

Secondary embedding refers to the surgical procedure of repositioning and temporarily burying a peritoneal dialysis (PD) catheter beneath the abdominal skin to preserve its function in patients on PD who have recovered kidney function but may require PD again in the future. We present a case of successful reinitiation of PD following catheter exteriorization, with uninterrupted PD therapy maintained for over 34 months without complications and with ongoing active use. This case highlights the feasibility and durability of secondary embedding as a strategy to preserve peritoneal access and facilitate long-term PD management in this patient population.
