Systematic screening of occupational exposures in patients with prostate or kidney cancer

Introduction:
Occupational exposures are recognized risk factors for kidney and prostate cancers. Since 2021-2022 in France, kidney cancers related to trichloroethylene exposure and prostate cancers related to pesticide exposure can be compensated. However, cancers remain largely underreported as occupational diseases. This study aimed to assess a systematic screening of occupational exposures in patients with kidney or prostate cancers and treated at Lyon Sud Hospital (CHLS).
Methods:
Patients received a self-administered questionnaire to collect their job history and potential occupational exposures to carcinogens. Completed questionnaires were assessed by a physician to determine if an occupational consultation was necessary. If a compensation claim was considered possible by the physician during the consultation, a medical certificate was delivered to the patient.
Results:
Over three months, 208 patients received the self-administered questionnaire. One hundred and five were returned completed (for 84 prostate cancers and 25 kidney cancers) and a specialized consultation was required for 14 patients. A compensation claim was proposed to 11 patients (10.5%), including eight prostate cancers related to pesticide exposure and three kidney cancers related to trichloroethylene exposure and the need to better inform patients of their rights.
Conclusion:
Our results show that the implemented screening procedure enabled the identification of patients who could claim their prostate or kidney cancer as an occupational disease, and highlight the importance of a specialized occupational interview.
