Background:

  • Depression is a prevalent mental health disorder with complex links to systemic inflammation and oral health.
  • Poor oral hygiene is associated with depressive symptoms, but evidence on interdental cleaning, specifically dental floss, is limited.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between regular dental floss use and the prevalence of depression in a U.S. adult population.
  • To determine if interdental cleaning habits correlate with mental health outcomes.

Main Methods:

  • Analysis of data from 17,250 participants in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES).
  • Depression assessed via Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9); dental floss use via Oral Health Questionnaire.
  • Logistic/linear regression, restricted cubic spline, and subgroup analyses were performed.

Main Results:

  • A significant inverse association was found between dental floss use and depression risk (OR=0.954).
  • Flossing five or more times weekly correlated with a substantially lower prevalence of depression (OR=0.735).
  • A linear relationship demonstrated that increased flossing frequency corresponded to decreased depression risk.

Conclusions:

  • Regular dental floss use is associated with a reduced risk of depression.
  • Interdental cleaning emerges as a potential preventive measure for mental health promotion within oral hygiene practices.
