  • To investigate the association between reward processing and suicidal ideation in early adolescents.
  • To examine neural activation patterns during reward anticipation and receipt.
  • To differentiate findings based on youth- and parent-reported suicidal ideation.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized the ABCD baseline sample (N=5702) of preadolescents.
  • Employed whole-brain analyses of neural activation during the Monetary Incentive Delay (MID) task.
  • Compared brain activity between groups with youth- and/or parent-reported suicidal ideation and controls.

Main Results:

  • Preadolescents with suicidal ideation (youth- and parent-reported) showed blunted frontal activation during reward/loss anticipation.
  • Preadolescents with parent-reported suicidal ideation (but not youth-reported) exhibited heightened activation during anticipation compared to controls.
  • Findings suggest aberrant reward processing in preadolescents with suicidal ideation, varying by report source.

Conclusions:

  • This study supports aberrant reward processing in preadolescents experiencing suicidal ideation.
  • Neural response variations depend on whether suicidal ideation is reported by youth or parents.
  • Future interventions should consider both youth and parent reports for improved outcomes.
