Academic health systems face unique financial, workforce, and regulatory challenges, especially when serving underserved populations.
OU Health experienced significant clinical, financial, and cultural distress following a divestiture and the COVID-19 pandemic.
The need for a strategic turnaround was critical for the survival and mission fulfillment of Oklahoma's sole academic health system.

Purpose of the Study:

To describe the transformation process of OU Health from a state of distress to a unified, mission-driven enterprise.
To present a replicable framework for health system transformation emphasizing culture and safety.
To demonstrate early signs of recovery and performance improvement in a large academic health system.

Main Methods:

Implementation of a comprehensive turnaround strategy based on three pillars: shared vision, safety leadership, and aligned accountability.
Utilized structured change management and a systemwide learning map engagement involving nearly 10,000 employees.
Redefined safety governance using learning health system principles and established clear leadership expectations.

Main Results:

Achieved measurable improvements, including reductions in hospital-acquired infections and mortality rates.
