Anthropogenic activities have triggered a global biodiversity crisis, characterized by severe declines in insect abundance and species richness. Effective conservation is often hindered by the taxonomic impediment and the 'Raunkiæran shortfall' - the limited knowledge regarding species' ecological and functional traits. However, developing targeted conservation strategies requires moving beyond observed patterns toward mechanistic, trait-based frameworks. Here, we examine how several major and emerging threats - biological invasions, wildlife trade, climate change, and light pollution - impact insect communities via complex direct and indirect pathways. Drawing on recent literature, we argue that mechanistic insights facilitate 'precision species conservation', allowing for targeted management strategies tailored to specific ecological vulnerabilities. For example, understanding how artificial light disrupts insect flight enables more sustainable lighting designs that reduce mortality, while identifying trait-based vulnerabilities strengthens biosecurity and trade regulations to limit biological invasions and unsustainable wildlife trade. Because the magnitude of these impacts varies across trophic, morphological, and taxonomic scales, conservation scenarios must be equally specialized. Bridging the gap between mechanistic ecological knowledge and practical application is critical for developing robust frameworks to mitigate global insect biodiversity loss.
