Background:
Temporomandibular joint disorders (TMJDs) are painful musculoskeletal conditions affecting the temporomandibular joint, for which pharmacological options remain incompletely defined.
Objective:
This scoping review mapped the extent, range, and nature of research on TMJD pharmacological research (2014-2025), examining current interventions and identified emerging therapeutic targets.
Methods:
A systematic search across PubMed, ScienceDirect, Scopus, and Web of Science (2014-2025), included clinical andanimal studies. Data were synthesized following JBI scoping review methodology and reported per PRISMA-ScR guidelines.
Results:
Seventy-eight studies met inclusion criteria (21 primary human studies, 34 reviews, and 23 animal studies). Eight pharmacological categories were identified: hyaluronic acid (10 studies), corticosteroids (4), NSAIDs and analgesics (19), bisphosphonates (3), drug delivery mechanisms (10), emerging agents (9), comparative studies (10), and general reviews (13).
Conclusions:
Evidence gaps persist in standardized outcome measures, long-term efficacy, and subtype-specific prescribing. Rigorous clinical trials integrating diagnostic phenotypingare essential to advance individualized pharmacotherapy.
