Psychometrics of Chinese-Language Versions of Three Standardized Motor Assessments: A Systematic Review

Aims:
This systematic review synthesized evidence on the psychometric properties of three widely used developmental assessments: the Ages and Stages Questionnaire (ASQ), Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development (BSID), and Movement Assessment Battery for Children (MABC) in Chinese-speaking populations. The aim was to identify patterns of reliability, validity, and contextual influences relevant to pediatric motor assessment.
Methods:
A systematic literature search was conducted in PubMed, Web of Science, and PsycINFO. Published studies evaluating Chinese-language versions of the ASQ, BSID, and MABC were examined for reported reliability, validity evidence, translation and adaptation procedures, and observed performance patterns. Owing to methodological heterogeneity, findings were synthesized narratively.
Results:
Across instruments, translated versions generally demonstrated acceptable internal consistency and inter-rater reliability. Concurrent and criterion-related validity findings were more variable and context dependent, particularly when interpreted against Western normative frameworks. Consistent domain-specific performance patterns suggested that culturally shaped motor experiences influence assessment outcomes. Reporting of translation and adaptation procedures was inconsistent, limiting the evaluation of construct equivalence.
Conclusions:
These assessments can support pediatric therapy practice when interpreted within children's cultural and environmental contexts. Integrating standardized testing with clinical observation and caregiver input may enhance functional decision-making and guide culturally responsive intervention planning.
