Abstract:
This chapter details the development methodology employed in the creation of DEGRADATOR, a 2D computer game designed to teach the intricacies of the ubiquitin-proteasome system (UPS), a crucial cellular pathway responsible for protein degradation. The UPS, with its multistep enzymatic processes and critical role in health and disease, presents both a challenge and an opportunity for engaging education. Rooted in constructivist game-based learning principles, DEGRADATOR translates abstract molecular mechanisms into an engaging and interactive learning experience. This chapter presents the pedagogical design framework, technical implementation, and iterative development process, incorporating beta testing and user feedback. We aim to provide a comprehensive account of the development process, offering insights and considerations for educators and developers interested in leveraging game-based methodologies to enhance science education and foster public understanding of complex, yet vital, scientific topics like protein degradation.
