None:
Mechanophores are force-sensitive molecules that can be activated upon elongation with the help of actuating polymers. Mechanophores have been designed for various applications including force-sensing, catalysis, and the controlled release of functional molecules. However, most of these mechanophores are activated at relatively high forces, sometimes close to the rupture force of the actuating polymers, which limits their applicability in applications requiring a high efficiency and selectivity of activation, such as controlled release. Here, we present a furan/acrylamide mechanophore that can be activated at low force (FCOGEF = 3.0 nN), leading to its complete and selective activation in solution. Complete activation is achieved in a standard sonication bath, eliminating the need for specialized, high-intensity ultrasonic probes. The weakness and versatility of this mechanophore were demonstrated through the controlled release of active molecules in solution with a quantitative efficiency.
