Summary

A needs-based communication program improved new Korean nurses' job satisfaction and communication skills. The program enhanced intentions to stay, self-encouragement, and workplace friendships, but did not significantly reduce burnout or fear of negative evaluations.

Background:

New nurses face challenges in organizational adaptation.
Effective communication is crucial for nurse retention and well-being.
A needs-based communication program was developed to support novice nurses.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate the impact of a needs-based communication program on new Korean nurses.
To assess changes in job satisfaction, burnout, and communication skills.
To foster better organizational adaptation among early-career nurses.

Main Methods:

A quasi-experimental design with a non-equivalent control group was employed.
Participants included 93 new Korean nurses from general hospitals.
The experimental group received an 8-week needs-based communication program.

Main Results:

The program significantly increased intentions to stay, self-encouragement, workplace friendships, and communication.
No significant differences were found in burnout or fear of negative evaluations between groups.
Positive effects were observed in nonviolent communication skills.

Conclusions:

The needs-based communication program is effective in improving key aspects of new nurses' adaptation.
The program can be integrated into nursing curricula to support novice nurses.
Further research may explore reducing burnout and fear of negative evaluations.
