    • This study addresses hemolysis rates and phlebotomy practices for troponin testing.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To decrease troponin sample hemolysis rates in an urban academic medical center's emergency department.
    • To increase troponin sample collection by emergency room technicians.
    • To evaluate the impact of phlebotomy training on hemolysis rates by nurses and technicians.

    Main Methods:

    • Quality improvement design over 12 weeks pre- and post-intervention.
    • Assessed staff knowledge via pre- and post-tests on blood specimen collection.
    • Provided educational in-service to registered nurses and emergency department technicians.

    Main Results:

    • Overall departmental troponin hemolysis rates decreased from 7.2% to 3.4%.

    • Improved phlebotomy practices enhance the reliability of cardiac biomarker testing.
