Background:

Evidence-based practice (EBP) competence is crucial for high-quality nursing care.
A validated instrument to assess EBP competence in the Italian nursing context was lacking.
This study addresses the need for a reliable EBP assessment tool for Italian nurses.

Purpose of the Study:

To translate and culturally adapt the Evidence-Based Practice Competency Scale for Italian registered nurses and advanced practice nurses.
To psychometrically validate the Italian version of the EBP Competency Scale.
To provide a culturally relevant and validated tool for assessing EBP competence in Italy.

Main Methods:

Cross-sectional online survey of 405 Italian nurses in 2024.
Translation and cultural adaptation of the 24-item EBP Competency Scale following international guidelines.
Content validity assessment by expert panel, followed by exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses, reliability testing (internal consistency, test-retest), and measurement invariance testing.

Main Results:

High content validity indices (I-CVI = 0.75-1.00; S-CVI = 0.92).
A one-factor model demonstrated excellent fit, explaining 72.1% of variance.
Very high reliability (Cronbach's α = 0.974; ICC = 0.83) and supported measurement invariance, with lower EBP competence noted in nurses lacking prior training.

Conclusions:

The Italian EBP Competency Scale is a valid and reliable instrument for assessing EBP competence in Italian nurses.
This validated scale can be used for benchmarking, guiding EBP education, and informing implementation strategies.
The scale provides a foundation for future advanced psychometric research in EBP competence.
