Abstract:
Marble may contain low levels of heavy metals and radioactive materials, which can be harmful to health, particularly in enclosed spaces. This research assesses the use of Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) as a rapid and semi destructive technique for analyzing hazardous elements in seven commonly used marbles employed in construction. With a high-energy Nd: YAG laser, plasma was generated on the marble surfaces, the emission spectra were collected, and the relevant radioactive and toxic components were analyzed. Noteworthy were the cadmium (Cd) concentrations, which were 9.84% and 8.86% in Marble Parlino and Marble White (Peshawar origin), respectively, as well as considerable samarium (Sm) levels. Some trace radioactive elements were also detected, such as U and Th in Ziarat White and Marble White. Brown marble from Karachi had the highest purity of calcium (88%) and can be suggested for structural uses. Some plasma parameters, electron temperature, and electron density were computed from the spectral data, enabling calibration-free quantitative analysis. These results bolster the use of LIBS as a real-time and trustworthy method for the safety evaluation of construction materials, thereby improving public health and environmental protection in construction projects.
