Alopecia areata (AA) is a chronic autoimmune disorder characterised by sudden, non-scarring hair loss due to the immune system mistakenly attacking hair follicles. It affects approximately 2% of the population and can manifest in various patterns, ranging from small patches to total loss of scalp and body hair. While the exact cause remains unknown, genetic predisposition and environmental triggers play a significant role in its development. Hair follicles in affected individuals become arrested in later stages of the hair growth cycle, leading to premature transition to the catagen or telogen phase and impaired regrowth. Though not life-threatening, AA has profound psychological and emotional effects, impacting self-esteem and quality of life. Various treatment options, including corticosteroids, immunotherapy, and emerging biologic therapies, aim to manage symptoms and promote hair regrowth, but no definitive cure exists. Ongoing research continues to explore the genetic and immunological mechanisms underlying the condition to develop more effective treatments. Awareness and support for individuals with AA remain crucial in helping them cope with the physical and emotional challenges associated with the disorder. This article provides a comprehensive overview of the genetics, causes, and treatment options for AA.
