Transarterial embolization (TAE) offers a new treatment for Kasabach-Merritt syndrome (KMS) when drugs fail. This interventional radiology technique successfully treated a drug-resistant KMS case, normalizing platelet counts and shrinking the vascular tumor.

Area of Science:

  • Interventional Radiology
  • Pediatric Hematology
  • Vascular Anomalies

Background:

  • Kasabach-Merritt syndrome (KMS) is a rare, life-threatening condition involving vascular tumors, severe thrombocytopenia, and coagulopathy.
  • Current first-line drug therapies for KMS are often ineffective in refractory cases, with no established salvage treatments.
  • Kaposiform hemangioendothelioma (KHE) is a common vascular tumor associated with KMS.
